Silver Copper Crossing

On Friday, June 7th, 2024, there was a grand opening celebration in honor of the opening of Silver Copper Crossing, a much anticipated second bridge connecting Bullhead City, Arizona, and Laughlin, Nevada. Festivities included live music, food trucks, a dedication from area officials, and a parade of motorcycles and corvettes.

Silver Copper Crossing is a brand-new 724-foot-long bridge that stands 35 feet above the Colorado River. Fisher Sand & Gravel served as the prime contractor on this project. The bridge is constructed of precast concrete girders on drilled shaft foundations and features one lane of traffic in each direction and a pedestrian path on the south side. Also included in the project was the construction of a 3 ½ mile two-lane approach roadway on the Nevada side and a .2-mile extension of the Bullhead Parkway on the Arizona side.

Construction started in November 2021.

Fisher Sand and Gravel engineers delt with numerous challenges with the installation of temporary dams to build piles and piers on with fluctuating water levels throughout the day. FSG had to build and set precast beams during the low river flow season, November to March each year. Once pier caps were in place, FSG began the setting of 50 precast concrete girders with weights over 200,000 lbs. FSG utilized cranes from 100-ton to 550-ton capacity throughout various stages of work and to set precast concrete beams. Once beams were set, the final stages including placing the bridge deck, guardrails, fencing, and painting operations were completed.

In addition to building a bridge over the Colorado River, FSG pioneered new roadway through native deserts to the bridge. FSG encountered endless sands that caused havoc with earthmoving equipment. However, FSG once again overcame these issues and completed the roadway as required with all necessary infrastructure; paving, drainage systems and landscaping.
